Bootp support is provided for generic devices. The Configuration tab contains a single screen that provides the ability to set up basic bootp parameters. These parameters allow the SDM to interact with the device using the BootP and TFTP protocols.

The Select Boot File Path field is populated, by default, with the path /home/sdm/boot. All bootp file data for a given generic device must reside under this directory location in order for bootp and TFTP communication between the SDM and the generic device to function properly. Users are permitted and encouraged to maintain the directory/file structure under this location as desired for generic device support. Setting up and configuring a generic device for BootP support is described in Configuring a Generic Device for BootP.

The Vendor Cookie field provides the ability to customize the vendor magic cookie value. By default, it is 99.130.83.99.

The BootP Vendor Tags table provides the ability to specify defined Bootp options (tag/values) and/or vendor-(site-)specific bootp extension tags for a generic device.

As per the BootP protocol, defined vendor information extensions (tag codes/value) are specified with tag codes in the range of 0-127. For example:

  • Tag code 1 specifies the subnet mask for a device.
  • Tag code 3 specifies the gateway address for the device.

Tag codes in the range of 128-254 are reserved for site-specific information to be specified. They are intended to be interpreted on a vendor-specific implementation basis.

Please refer to the following RFCs for further details on specifying BootP options:

  • RFC 951 (BootP protocol)
  • RFC 1542 (Clarifications and Extensions for the Bootstrap Protocol.
  • RFC 2132 (DHCP Options and BootP Vendor Extensions.
  • RFC 1497 (BootP Vendor Information Extensions)

The following figure demonstrates how the vendor information tags are specified for a subnet mask and a gateway address, as well as how site-specific vendor tags are specified. Rows 1 and 2 specify the subnet and gateway tag information, and rows 3 through 5 specify site-specific tag information.
