The Configuration and Status portion of the SDM software allows the user to:
  • View the status of a device
  • Configure a device, using the SDM
As noted in Step 4 - Group/Organize Devices, there are three primary device views:
  • Network
  • Groups
  • Inventory

These views are accessed using the tree structure. Click on a tree structure to display either a map view (device icons shown) or a list view (rows of devices) of the devices to be displayed. These views provide the ability to check the status of a device, and they also provide the ability to configure a device.

The following table provides guidance on when to use which view.

Device Views

Preferred Use

Network

View all devices on a given network.

Groups

View all devices that share a given group name.

Inventory

View all discovered devices.

Double-click device icons or device list entries to display the Device Properties window. Select an icon or list row, then right-click to display a menu of operations for the given device. Using the Help icon on the menu bar, access the SDM on-line help for more details.

General configuration of a device is done using the Device Properties window. To access the Device Properties window, double-click on a device in a map view, or right-click on a device and select Properties.

  • The Identity tab provides identification information and general status for a device.
  • The Configuration & Status tab is unique for each device type, and provides the ability to configure device parameters. Changes that can be made using SNMP are sent immediately to the device. Other changes may require a BOOTP operation to propagate to the device.
  • The Administration tab provides access to management operations, such as BOOTP, and shows network configuration of a device.

Global operations can be performed at a group level or device type level. These operations include setting the BOOTP state, rebooting, and setting the trap receiver address. The Global Operations screen can be accessed by selecting Configuration > Global Parameters on the SDM.
