An alarm action customizes the manner in which any or all alarms are reported. You can specify the following actions for an alarm or group of alarms based on defined criteria:

  • Suppressing alarms
  • Generating an e-mail message
  • Performing a command
NOTE: The alarm actions function is a system-level feature and cannot be applied to specific devices.
  1. Access the Alarm Actions window with: .Menu Bar > Fault > Alarm Filter

    The Alarm Actions window is displayed:

    Item

    Description

    Severity

    Critical, Major, Minor, Warning, and Unknown.

    Device Type

    Device model or nomenclature.

    Device Name

    Name assigned to the device. If no name is assigned, the IP address.

    Alarm Type

    Alarm severity.

    Suppress

    Indicates whether the alarm is suppressed or not.

    E-mail

    The e-mail address to be notified when the alarm occurs. The e-mail server IP address must be configured before any e-mail can be sent.

    To configure, select Administration > Email Server, and then click the Fault tab in the Options window.

    Command

    The command to run when the alarm occurs.

  2. Click Add to display the Alarm Filter Definition window:
  3. Define what alarms or device types the action will apply to:

    Description

    Severity

    Select the severity: Critical, Major, Minor, Warning, or Clear.

    Device Type

    Select the device type.

    Device Name

    Select the device name.

    Alarm Type

    Select the type of alarm.

    From the Alarm Filter Definition window, you can choose the following options for the criteria you specify:

    • Suppress Alarms (the alarm is not saved in the SDM database). This selection is mutually exclusive with Send email or execute command (see Send an alarm e-mail notificationSending an E-Mail Notification for an Alarm).
    • Send an e-mail notification when the alarm occurs. This selection is mutually exclusive with Suppress Alarms (implemented by clicking Suppress Alarms in the Add Alarm Action window).
    • Execute a command when an alarm occurs (see Execute a command for an alarmExecuting a Command for an Alarm). This selection is mutually exclusive with Suppress Alarms (implemented by selecting Suppress Alarms in the Add Alarm Action window).
