When adding a new, unconfigured device to your headend, you can:
  • use the Add a Device option, and enter a valid device name and IP address; if they do not already exist in the /etc/hosts file, they will be added.
-or-
  • manually edit the etc/hosts file, and add an entry for the new device. (Refer to Edit the Hosts File for instructions.)

The Add a Device option adds the device to the SDM using the SDM's default configuration parameters. The

device's IP address and type determine the device group to which the device is added. You can also move a device to a different device group using the Add a Device option.
  • To name your devices, enter the name in the Name field of the Add New Device window. (Alternatively, you can add the device names to appropriate entries in the /etc/hosts file. Refer to Editing the Hosts File for details.)
NOTE: Device names managed by the SDM must all be in lower case, begin with a character, and be no more than 40 characters in length.
  • To add existing, pre-configured devices, see Discovering Devices.
  • You must first load device firmware before you can discover or add devices to the SDM. See Load device firmware for more information.
  • You can also add a new device by copying the device configuration parameters from an existing device. See Add new devices - copy existing devices.

When a device is added to the system, the device is automatically marked as unmanaged.
