A group is a logical order of devices that you define. A group is defined only on the New Group window; however, devices are assigned to a group manually, or through device discovery using network mapping. When using device discovery network mapping, you can specify a single device by IP address, or multiple devices within a specified IP range, and this range can be further defined optionally by device type. It is not necessary to define groups before discovering devices for the SDM; however, if discovered devices are to be associated with a specific group, it is better to define the group first, followed by the network mapping.

To add a new device group:

  1. Select Configuration > Add Group from the Menu Bar. The New Device Group window displays.
  2. Type the <name> in the Group Name field.
NOTE: The group name must be unique.
  3. Click Browse and from the Select a Member Group window that is displayed, select a group to which this new group will be subordinate. It can be the main tree level Groups or a sub-level group already defined.
  4. Type a <group description> in the Description field. (Optional)
  5. Type a <group application launch command> in the Command text field. (Optional) The Argument field is populated with default properties.
NOTE: Configuration of the Command field can be performed by both Administrators and Power Users. The command can be launched by all users.
  6. Click Launch; the application is launched using the command provided in the Command text field.
  7. Click Apply; a query pop-up is displayed, which asks if another group should be added.
    • To create another group, click Yes and repeat step 2 (and optionally repeat steps 3 and 4).
    • To stop creating groups when you do not want to configure network discovery mapping at this time.
    1. Click No on the pop-up.
    2. Click Close on the New Group window. You can continue at another time with Network Discovery Mapping from the Discovery Properties window.
    • To configure network discovery mapping for this group:
    1. Click No on the pop-up. The Network Mapping and Fault tabs are activated on the New Group window.
    2. Proceed to Network Mapping from the New Group Window.
