Discovery is the process by which the SDM automatically adds existing networks to the SDM. The discovery process can be performed at any time.
NOTE: It is recommended that all networks be added for discovery. However, for devices that can be managed from multiple networks (like APEX3000), only one network should be included at a time for discovery.
The discovery process can be performed at any time, keeping in mind that:
- The device firmware must be loaded on each network device before it can be discovered by the SDM.
- If the network devices are added to a group, IP address ranges (with the same device type) within one group cannot overlap with IP address ranges of another group.
- If a network has already been discovered or already exists in the system, it cannot be rediscovered. Rediscovering a network does not move it from one group to another.
- When a network device is first discovered, it is automatically marked as a managed device. When a device is managed, the SDM determines the current status of the device by retrieving the alarm status from the device. When a device is unmanaged, the alarm status is graytone, and the discovery process does not retrieve the current alarm status of the device. Additionally, status polling is disabled, traps are not processed, and performance polling is disabled for the device. Click Inventory and review the Status column of the devices just added.
When discovering a network, the SDM:
- Retrieves all device configuration information from each device on the network
- Synchronizes the alarm status for each network device
- Maps each network device to the SDM's managed firmware
