The SDMs Polls Group is a statistical collection of enhanced polling capabilities that provide information to help identify system level issues. Statistical data is compiled and reported for 10 poll groups as follows:

  • Alarm
  • BOOTP (Bootstrap Protocol)
  • Event
  • HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
  • ICMP Ping (Internet Control Message Protocol)
  • Northbound Interface
  • SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) Request
  • SNMP Trap
  • TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol)
  • Topology

Polling parameters for each group are set using the applicable SDM Poll Parameters Configuration Page, each of which can be invoked from the SDM Poll Parameters Configuration Main Page.

To access the SDM Poll Parameters Configuration Main Page:

  1. On the Menu Bar click Performance > Configure SDM Polls. The SDM Poll Parameters Configuration Main Page window is displayed:
  2. Click the Modify link of a poll group to invoke its SDM Poll Parameters Configuration Page. A typical SDM Poll Parameters Configuration Page is as follows:

Common selections or data entered in every SDM Poll Parameters Configuration Page, which are also displayed in the columns of the SDM Poll Parameters Configuration Main Page window are:

    Parameter Description

    Enabled

When active (filled) the SDM collects the statistics and saves them at the provided Poll Time Interval.

    Poll Time Interval

Specifies how often the statistic samples for the given statistic group are saved. A statistic sample is retained for a configurable number of days. Selection times are:

    15 Minutes

    30 Minutes

    1 Hour

    2 Hours

    3 Hours

    4 Hours

    6 Hours

    8 Hours

    12 Hours

    24 Hours

    Poll Results Storage Duration (days)

The number of days that statistical samples are kept.

Threshold parameters, which are not listed in the SDM Poll Parameters Configuration Main Page window, can also be modified in the SDM Poll Parameters Configuration Page. Not all of the groups have threshold parameters. Those groups that do have threshold parameters are listed in the following table:

    Poll Threshold Description Group Definition

    Enabled

    One for each threshold definition.

When active (filled) and a non-zero threshold is provided, the SDM generates an alarm when the configured threshold criteria are exceeded.

    SNMP

    Trap

    Excessive Alarm Synchronization (%)

The SDM generates an alarm when the percentage of received traps from all managed devices that require alarm synchronization within the configured poll interval is greater than this threshold. The SDM performs alarm synchronization when a trap is received with an unexpected trap sequence number, which typically indicates one or more missed traps from a device.

    Received Trap Count (/min)

The SDM generates an alarm when the number of traps received per minute for a given device is greater than this threshold within the configured poll interval.

    System Trap Rate (/sec)

The SDM generates an alarm when the number of traps received per second from all managed device within the system is greater than this threshold within the configured poll interval.

    SNMP

    Request

    Excessive SNMP Retries (%)

The SDM generates an alarm when the percentage of SNMP requests requiring one or more retries for a device is greater than this threshold within the configured poll interval. Excessive SNMP retries without failures typically indicate that a device is unresponsive to SNMP requests or that SNMP requests are being dropped by the network.

    Excessive SNMP Failures (%)

The SDM generates an alarm when the percentage of SNMP requests that have failed within the configured poll interval for a given device is greater than this threshold. Excessive SNMP failures may indicate that a device is unresponsive or unavailable or that a network is unavailable.

    Average SNMP Response Time (msec)

The SDM generates an alarm when the average SNMP response time in milliseconds for a given device is greater than this threshold within the configured poll interval. Increased SNMP response times may indicate that a device is unresponsive or increased network latency.

    Event

    Dropped Events (/min)

The SDM generates an alarm when the number of dropped events within the configured poll interval across the entire system is greater than this threshold. Excessive dropped events may occur when there are too many simultaneous events for the SDM to process.

    Received Event Count (/min)

The SDM generates an alarm when the number of events that are processed per minute within the system is greater than this threshold.

    TFTP

    Excessive TFTP Requests Aborted (%)

The SDM generates an alarm when the percentage of aborted FTP requests within the configured poll interval across the entire system is greater than this threshold.
