Use the Northbound Interface window to configure a maximum of four host management systems as destinations for SDM-generated traps. The SDM supports two protocol types, SNMP and EMAIL, for traffic to northbound destinations:

  • When the SNMP protocol is selected, the Events and Alarms generated by the SDM are forwarded to the northbound destination as SNMP V2 Traps. This protocol is selected by default.
  • When the EMAIL protocol is selected, the data is packaged inside one or more email messages.
NOTE: By default, the interfaces are disabled.
  1. Select Fault > Northbound Configuration from the SDM menu bar. The Northbound Configuration/Sync screen displays.

The Summary pane in the upper portion of the window displays a configuration summary for the four northbound destinations.

    Field or Button

    Description

    NBI Enabled

Click ON to enable the given northbound destination. Click OFF to disable a northbound destination.

    Status

The Status indicator color indicates status as follows:

Red - The Northbound destination is off-line.

Green - The Northbound destination is enabled.

Grey - The Northbound destination is disabled.

    Type

The Type field provides the ability to select the protocol type to be used for the Northbound interface; the choices are: SNMP protocol EMAIL

    IP Address

The IP Address field displays the IP address of the destination to which the northbound interface traps will be sent. This parameter is applicable only when the Type is set to the SNMP protocol. When the Type is set to the EMAIL protocol, the default value of

    0.0.0.0 is displayed.

    Hostname

The Hostname field displays the hostname of the northbound destination to which the IP Address belongs. This parameter is applicable only when the Type is set to the SNMP protocol.

    Throttling Rate/Period

The maximum rate at which the SNMP traps or e-mails may be sent.

    Pending Notifications

The number of northbound notifications remaining that must be forwarded to the northbound destination.

    Filter Set

The filter set assigned to the destination.

  2. Click on a northbound destination to select it from the Summary pane. The contents of the Configuration Details pane are updated to display the configuration of the selected destination.
When SNMP is selected as the Type, modify the configuration parameters of the northbound destination (described below), as necessary.

    Configuration Parameter

    Description

    IP Address/Hostname

The IP Address of the destination, or the hostname to which the IP Address resolves.

    Port

The UDP port on the given destination to which the traps will be sent.

    Trap Community

The snmp trap community to be used for the NBI traps.

    Filter-Set

The filter-set assigned to the destination. Filter-Set selections include:

    Send All Alarms

    Send All Events

    Send Everything

    Send Upstream Alarms

    Send Quality Alarms

    Heartbeat

Enabled To allow SDM to send out periodic heartbeat notifications to the northbound destination

Disabled To prevent SDM from sending out periodic heartbeat notifications to the northbound destination.

    Heartbeat Period

The periodicity (in minutes) at which the Heartbeat notifications will be sent out to the northbound destination.

    Throttling Rate

(traps/sec) The maximum number of traps per second to be transferred.

  3. Configure the email-related parameters (described in the next table) as necessary when the Type is set to the EMAIL protocol.
  4. Click Send Test Mail to send a test mail to a recipient.
  5. Click Restore Default Message to return the Subject field to the default text, Northbound Notification.
The Sync/Operational Details pane displays the operational status of the selected northbound destination.
NOTE: Sync operation is applicable only when Type is set to SNMP.
