In preparation for loading device firmware into the SDM database, have the device firmware available on removable media (USB drive, CD, etc.) or on a networked PC which is accessible by the SDM client.

Before the SDM can help manage your headend devices, the devices must have their firmware loaded into the SDM database. New device firmware can be ordered from the CustomerCare 360 Documentation Center arris.com/support site.

There are two ways to load firmware:
  • An automated method, which is integrated with the CAST architecture. Refer to the CAST Support Overview and Install a CAST File Set for details on using this method.

  • The traditional method, using a manual firmware download operation. That method is described in this section, in the table below.

Loading Firmware (Traditional Method)

Load Firmware

Detail

Step 1

Obtain firmware from the ARRIS Support site (see address link above).

Step 2

Copy the firmware files to the SDM.

Method 1:
  • Load a CD containing the files into the CD drive of the SDM.

  • Use the Command Tool window or browser to copy the files from the CD to the directory /tmp.

Method 2:
  • Using remote copy (rcp), ftp, or some other method, copy the files over the network to the SDM to /tmp.

  • If using ftp, use BINARY mode, not ASCII, to transfer.

Step 3

Change directory (cd) to the directory /home/sdm/firmware. This directory contains subdirectories with names of the device types the SDM already manages.

If the firmware is the very first version for this device type, a directory with the device type (for example, APEX), then a subdirectory named after the version number (for example, 1.1.0), will be created. Subsequent versions of firmware for this device only need to have a subdirectory version created.

Step 4

Copy the files from /tmp to /home/sdm/firmware. Make sure the files are readable by all.

Step 5

Once the files are copied, log on to the SDM and from the main menu bar, and select Configuration > Firmware Management. A table is displayed in the window. For each piece of loaded firmware, a row in the table provides relevant information, such as Device Type, Model, Version, Release Date, Installation Date, and so on.

Step 6

Select and add the firmware to the SDM database.
